Taking the train and tuning in

Greetings, everyone! Saturday was a maiden voyage for us on Utah's FrontRunner commuter-rail service. It was really an issue of envy that led us to want to ride the train. Only a few blocks traveling east or south from our house, we find ourselves often delayed by this magnificent mode of transportation — so for once, we wanted to be on the other side of that.

But really, we just did it for fun. I'll now post a picture of what the FrontRunner looks like while you all recover from that lame joke:

It took us northbound from Salt Lake City through places like Roy, a city once known as home to this guy:

And eventually it stops in Ogden, hometown of this guy:

Yes, that's quite a contrast, which makes it quite a journey! Overall it was a smooth ride, and the train has double-decker cars, so we enjoyed the view from the top floor.

Whilst in Ogden, we enjoyed our time at Union Station. It has a fleet of historic trains outside, among which is the car that carried the Olympic flame from Atlanta to Salt Lake City:

In case you haven't figured it out by now, we forgot our camera and didn't take any of these pictures.

There also is an indoor railroad museum that is fun and informative, a delight for children and adults alike! This is starting to sound like an ad! OK, we had fun. I'll stop now.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Last week's slate of high school football games was moved to Wednesday. This was due to the fact that no Utah schools held classes or extracurricular activities on Friday because it was UEA Day. If you're curious, UEA stands for "The First Day of Deer Season That a Lot of Kids Will Skip School For Anyway so We Just Gave Them The Day Off." We saw a barn-burner between Kearns and Riverton. The Riverton Silverwolves jumped out to a 20-7 lead. Kearns came roaring back to take a 21-20 edge, before Riverton mounted a 13-play, 6-minute drive to win. Great game!

But that wasn't the real story.

Our main focus was on the fact that the Phillies were about to advance to the World Series for the first time since approximately half my life ago (1993, you do the other math) ... and it was nowhere to be found on the radio! Check that, ESPN Radio had the pregame show almost up until the national anthem ... then cut away to two guys talking. The other stations? They had high school football.

Except for one station, which had ... brace yourselves for it ... UTAH JAZZ PRESEASON BASKETBALL! That's right, kids. Who wants to listen to two silly baseball teams duke it out to try and advance to the championship round when you can hear a game that counts for absolutely nothing?!

My beef isn't with the radio stations who carried the high school football games. Those contests at least had playoff implications across the board. No, my beef is with the venison, and the Utah Jazz.

But the Phillies won, and all is forgiven.

Because we have HIGH HOPES.
