Baby to Boy: It felt that fast

The newest addition to our family will arrive next week. At the time I write this, it is eight days until he enters the world — I can start counting in days because the total of "days" is in the single digits.

That means we've been moving things around in the house and bringing out items that M used when he was a baby, but that we'd put away more than a year ago. Among those items ... binkies!

One evening, we were sitting downstairs while M was playing upstairs. We heard his feet pitter-pattering down the stairs when we looked up and saw him with a binky in his mouth. He hasn't had one of those in his mouth for almost two years, and we found it quite hilarious.

A few days later, he wanted to put a binky in his mouth again. We humored him. He said he was "Baby Myles" and wanted to be cuddled and held in a blanket. He also made some "waaahhhh" sounds.

After about two minutes of Cindy cuddling him while he was swaddled in a blanket, he took the binky out, stood on the floor and said, "Now I'm Boy Myles!"

It hit me in that moment that M's process of growing up really felt that fast. It certainly doesn't feel like more than two and a half years have come and gone since he came into our lives. I realize that two and a half years seems a lot longer when you're younger and it's hard to wait for, well, anything. But I think someone pressed a fast-forward button somewhere.

This episode is especially poignant as M's baby brother will soon be filling our home with joy, laughs and cries. We've learned in so many ways to treasure this time with our little ones, before they change from Baby to Boy in the blink of an eye.
